OBX – Manteo, N.C.

Ok, these first two aren’t from Manteo they are from Alligator River where this “gas station and dock” had a Hatteras lighthouse replica.

The next pictures are of us approaching Manteo.  We had a lovely trip over in what was to be the best weather of the weekend.  The winds picked up as soon as we tied up.  The predicted storm missed us but only brought the temperature down from 108 degrees to 97.

Across the harbor from the Marina is the Roanoke Festival Park. Which has costumed staff teaching about the 1585 settlement here on the island.  The ship, Elizabeth II, was amazing to see.  We saw her all day from our boat and then got to see our boat from her ports below deck.   I also managed to learn and see new things on both the boat and in the wonderful interactive museum.

There was a Traverse Board on the Elizabeth II.  This is us looking at our boat through the port.

The afternoon was all about laundry and watching the local junior sailing regatta, they set up the windward / leeward racing just behind our boat, they were racing 420’s with the little kids in a separate Optimist class.  The higher 17 to 25 mph winds this week will change our itinerary a little, some of the stops on the north shore (leeward) will be rolling pretty hard.  We will stay another night in this beautiful town and enjoy this breeze from the east before the regular wind pattern returns.  We will head for Elizabeth City and the Dismal Swamp on Monday.
