Goodbye Florida – we will be back

After our delightful time in St. Augustine we had one last night of $7. hurricane drinks and fish & chips; then headed out under the Bridge of Lions.  Goodbye Rivers Edge Marina, we will be back!

Just after the lighthouse we headed north past the inlet and as we made the turn we got the flood tide bump! We were flying, for you fast boats – we hit 11.4 mph!

We headed through some beautiful lowlands and saw birds enjoying the marshes all morning.  This is a beautiful part of Florida.

When we got to the St. Johns River, we had to wait for a large ship to go by.  There was also a guided missile ship docked so there were also quite a few security boats around the area.

We stayed at the free dock at Sisters Creek, beautiful but in the afternoon there was quite a lot of current.

We are winding our way through these marshes in a channel that has frequent shoaling.  Shout out to Bob Tracks – Love you!

We left sisters on a rising tide and passed through more beautiful wetlands.

We got to Fernandina Beach mooring field and were immediately greeted by Steve from New Adventure.  We got a mooring ball, lowered the dinghy, and walked around to see what Fernandina looked like.

The birds at the dinghy dock were not moving until we got very close.  One pelican just stared me down and watched me walk around him.

The town is relaxed and beautiful.  It didn’t hurt that we had beautiful sunshine after so many rainy days.  I’m still drying things out in the sun.

I thought the bagged oyster shells as a “breakwater” of sorts was cool. Looked it up here.

We walked the town and came back to relax on the boat.  We skipped the mini golf invite from Benita, New Adventure, and Sabot, then I noticed the sky got dark  suddenly.  And very quickly the wind picked up.  The squall only lasted about 45 minutes but as dramatic as it was on the mooring ball we saw video of the boats at the dock getting pounded.  Oh, the golf game was postponed but all participants made it back to their boats!

There is a powerplant on one side of Fernandina Beach and a paper plant on the other side.  Impressive sight day or night.  Made me want to listen to Animals.

From Fernandina Beach we travelled to Georgia – but that’s another blog for another day we have Wi-Fi.
