Norfolk

All Loopers say it, but it does bear repeating, after the peace of the Dismal Swamp, its strangely pleasing to see this explosion of civilization.  The Navy is everywhere and so are their boats.  There are container ships and barges as well as both large and small pleasure crafts (that’s us).

It was still pretty warm even with some “ocean smelling breezes” so we were thrilled to be plugged in and relax here in downtown Norfolk.   A treat to see not only oysters but coral on the marina pilings (nice docks btw! and lovely staff).

And then we got our first afternoon squall in a while (could have used it earlier in the week but I’ll take it).

Day two was the Nauticus and U.S.S. Wisconsin Museum.  Another extremely well done and interesting museum and the Wisconsin is just impressive.

Day 3 we took the ferry to Portsmouth (leaves every 1/2 hour from this dock – $2.oo one way)  We walked around old town and went to the Navy Museum/Lightship museum.  We could only see the outside of the lightship though – closed for renovations – they are working on the a/c).

Day three, the marina arranged for a taxi to the local Harris Teeter grocery store.  After the missed opportunity to go to the Food Lion in the Dismal Swamp, we thought about going to the Dollar General in Portsmouth and lugging bags back on the ferry.  When I walked in I remembered how i almost cried walking into the first Publics after coming down the rivers.

We walked a bit further for haircuts checking out the homes on the way.  The morning was overcast and breezy but we were happy to jump in the cab with all the groceries and stay inside in the A/C.  The Blue Moon Tap House is setting up the stage for a concert tonight.

Greetings from Norfolk from the crew of the Perfect Choice !
