From the Rivers to the Sea

We are still in “autumn” temperatures here on the rivers but we continue to follow the many many twists and turns of the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway heading south.

We stopped at Kingfisher Marina for two days of much needed provisioning and “land time”.  Loved this quirky marina with great amenities.  Then we headed out for many days of anchoring as there aren’t many places to stop along this part of the river.

We did our last lock for a while at Coffeeville and are traveling with a group of boats (Cway, Time for Two, De De, and others coming in and out of our group).  Great anchorages at Okatuppa Creek, 3 Rivers lake, and Big Briar which is part of the Tensaw River.

Much more industry, dredging, alligators! and the banks now have more sand and the trees are different.  Still loving our cypress trees and hanging moss.  The navigation bouys in this area are all over the place, mostly on shore (either side green or red) kinda crazy.

We loved the rivers, taking us from Kentucky to Tennessee, then south through Mississippi and Alabama, each area sharing a different view of a part of the country that should not be missed.  The people we met had a casual openness that is a throwback to a time we thought was gone.

There was a cold snap in November but we entered mobile bay and the water color changed, the sun came out.  Mobile bay is big, water depth outside the ship channel is around 10 feet, but 10 feet everywhere so you get used to it.    No dolphins yet but crossing mobile bay was beautiful.

We are now in Fairhope,Alabama which we are calling Florida lite. This is your classic post card marina with sailboats next to sports fishing, next to fully rigged and active shrimp boats.

This is so wonderful to be able to follow your journey. Fairhope seems quite lovely. We ate out last night at a Cajun restaurant. Side of grits to go with blackened redfish…’Thought of Brian:)

When I was just a wee lad, there was a popular song on the radio: “Shrimp Boats are a-coming, there’ll be dancing tonight”. I think you’ve just discovered the source of that music. Check it out on i-tunes.

Alligators?!?!?! Yikes! You’re not in the Delta for sure!
    Love the updates. Stay safe!
