As we worked our way back East, we had one more side trip. We turned South off the Erie Canal and took the Cayuga Seneca Canal to Seneca Falls, another town that knows how to make boaters feel at home.
We learned about Seneca Falls place in history as they hosted the first womens rights convention and the Declaration of Sentiments was signed by the attendees including Frederick Douglas and Susan B Anthony.
Seneca Falls, NY has evidence to support their claim that their town inspired Frank Capra’s screenplay for Its a Wonderful Life. He had family in the area and had his haircut in 1948 and the barber in town remembers him asking about the plaque on the bridge. There are similarities between movie scenes and local places in town, many cities in upstate NY are specifically mentioned in the movie and there are some names taken from local residents for movie characters. There is a great little museum with artifacts, documents, etc. from the movie.
There are events during the holiday season but fans of the movie come to the town daily to go to the bridge where at the turn of the century a man died while saving a girl who jumped from the bridge.
We enjoyed numerous rainstorms, moving quickly through the area.
One of those storms happened just as we left Seneca Falls so we did a few last locks in the rain. Enjoyed chatting with the Lock tenders as there was minimal boat traffic that day.
Perfect Choice is now tucked away at her winter harbor, appropriately named just that “Winter Harbor Marina”. We have Looped for almost 4,500 miles and over 60 locks. We are so happy to be segmenting our loop. We will be home with the grandkids and doing some route planning for next spring. We plan to head north to Canada when the canals open in the spring of 2024. Be sure you’ve subscribed so we don’t lose touch.
Here is a look at this Leg.
What a milestone!!!! Maybe I could do it on my waverunner! Of course I’m kidding. Hope to see you before we leave 9/11. Fort Bragg to Big Sur.
Sorry you didn’t have more time to explore the western canal area. So much more to see and do. Hope you get back there again.
