Wheeler Lake

We anchored across from Joe Wheeler State Park on Thursday Oct. 7 and it was so beautiful we stayed two nights.  There is a Heron couple that rule this cove and they are so funny to watch.  Mr. Heron perches on a stump in the water and stares.  Mrs. Heron hangs out in the shade of the trees on the beach in the warm water.  While I was bird watching, Brian replaced our leaky water heater.  Yay, hot water!

Speaking of water, everything is now dry after the monsoons of last weekend.  Its been warm and sunny and should stay that way for a bit.  We headed up river to the Decatur free wall where there happened to be a Bass Boat Championship this weekend.  We woke up the next morning to hear that the railroad bridge would be opening soon, so we got going and went through with some interesting boats.  We continued up river seeing beautiful homes and wild life.  For you delta rats – this whole area is like Georgiana Slough on steroids.

We  rented a car to get groceries for the next few weeks and see the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.  First looper lesson of the day; a scheduled pick up time does not mean the same thing everywhere. 

We eventually were on our way in a nice truck.  Huntsville, Alabama  is pretty cool.  The historic downtown has beautiful old homes and shops.  We went in a hardware store that’s been open since 1879.

The Space Center was amazing.  The size of the Apollo Saturn V Moon Rocket is incredible.  Walking inside the space station replica was like being on a science fiction movie set !

We decided that this was as far up river we wanted to go (this time around) and we will head down the river and will now be going with the current. Wheeee!
