We had read that Lockport is a great place to visit but there aren’t good places to stay overnight. Several people we met told us they had done it and loved it. You know Brian took that as a challenge.
At the top of lock 35 there is a small 60 foot dock with one 30 amp power pedestal, the water is a little shallow at one end and there is one area where there is a caved in section of wall so watch out for the rocks. That description in the guide book is why no one goes there. As we approached the lock we asked the lockmaster for permission to tie up, he enthusiastically said yes but came over and grabbed our lines, gave us the rundown of the town, “Fantastic ! ” is all we kept saying.
We were 50 feet from the old lock system and had free run of both the working locks. It was all open to the public of course, but we felt as if the entire place was ours.
We went to the visitors center museum and watched a wonderful video explaining all about these wonderful locks and the rock cut we had just gone through. Site with good pix like this
The one side of the original stone double set of five lock is intact while the other is now the modernized double lock.
Many folks wandered over and chatted us up, at one point Ellen was giving a loop overview to four people, (I was on a bike ride).
