August 2009

As usual, August ended too quickly.  The boys were busy with their own responsibilities at home and each traded off one weekend alone with us on the boat but most of the weekends we were busy moving the banshees, the ski boat, the small floating dock etc. back to their winter storage areas.
The trip back was pretty eventful.  After picking Delphie up at the boat yard with a freshly painted hull, we went back to the slough to get Otter.  We motored in tandem through Franks Tract.  It was very hot and the trip went well on day one; we stopped into Pittsburgh for gas and then tied to a piling for a swim.  Made it into Benicia Marina for a nice dinner and were surprised to find Tally Ho at the dock with us. A very nice surprise!
The next morning we got up early as we usually do to avoid the waves in San Pablo Bay.  But the tides, current and wind were not in our favor.  We had big swells which were difficult for Delphie.  Then the motor died on the sailboat and the boys were drifting towards the breakwater just past Mare Island.  Then their tiller snapped.  They were able to raise the jib and sail into Mare Island with us and we rafted for repairs.  The water continued to be very choppy all the way to the channel entrance.  It added a few hours to an already long day but except for the tiller there were no lasting damages.
