A Funny Thing Happened on The Way To Canada

Doing the Loop in sections, three to six months at a time has worked for us since we started in 2021 and sections gave us the ability to see the grand kids. When we are aboard longer than four months we start to miss our land hobbies.  When we are home too long, we want to get back on board and winterizing the boat and flying back and forth was getting old, we are ready for the next phase.

We spent the winter getting our home ready to sell. While preparing for the Canada Leg, we realized it was too big a part of our Loop to rush. We would have to postpone our “mini down east triangle” and focus on relocating to the Chesapeake. We hope to be “all in” for just a month or so as we bring the boat East and South to look for a home.

It was an emotional weekend as the movers took our things to storage and we visited friends and family in California. We thought we were leaving Monday but delays all day put us in a local hotel. We got out of Santa Rosa on Tuesday (upgraded to First class!) but we didn’t arrive in upstate NY until early Wednesday AM (beyond exhausted). Later on Wednesday morning, we woke up and got to Winter Harbor (it should be called Winter Haven). Perfect Choice did so well over the winter and was in good shape. Later we took the loaner car for groceries.

Being on the canal in upstate NY in summer is beautiful. We did chores for two days, met new friends and then left Friday to cross Lake Oneida. It was flat and sunny – perfect weather for the crossing.

We passed several possible stops and went 63 miles (two locks up and two down) more than our usual daily run, but we are excited to be getting “Home” to Virginia.  We stayed at Ilion Marina the first night,  we passed it last time, nothing special but fine for our needs. We saw a bald eagle slowly gliding past us and a medium sized turtle swimming.  There were many goslings being taught how to be Geese by their folks, so cute to watch.

We went a short way, 9 miles and one lock to Little Falls. It’s a good day for chores, a bike ride into town and an early dinner. The Rotary host took Brian to swap out our propane tank.  We took the bikes in to town for Linner and antiquing then back to the wall (there’s a graduation happening, then a birthday party).

Yes, Canada will happen it has only been postponed.

How lovely. Moments of serendipity and maybe welcoming by the “locals” 🙂
