Delmarva to Virginia

Delmarva is the Peninsula between the Delaware and the Chesapeake Bays.

We have been traveling fast.  In trawler language that means we have been traveling more than our usual 35-40 mile days taking some non-travel days every few days.  We are excited to get to Virginia and that is definitely moving us along, but the  heatwave has made for some of the most comfortable travel days and we didn’t want to lose the good weather.  We also have had days with current, tide or wind push so “fast” was 10.4 through the C & D Canal with the current.  In the first 11 days of this leg, we traveled as far as we did last year in the month of June,  ~500 miles.

We left Cape May and the winds were light, a VERY different trip than the one we did last year.  The day was long but we followed our tracks on the chart plotter so it wasn’t as stressful as the first time (this has been a theme this whole leg, enjoying the new cruiser lifestyle of repeats!

We arrived in Delaware City, unfortunately Tim had the day off.  We left the next morning and enjoyed an incredibly fast and fun ride through the C&D Canal.  We “visited” briefly with another Camano.  This is also a new normal, loop frogging over people as we are “going in the wrong direction” for loopers.

We passed the entrance to Baltimore just before turning into Rock Hall, MD.  It was too far away for good photos, but seeing half a bridge across such a big area was strange.  We didn’t stay long at Haven Harbor South and kept moving.  We decided to stay at Tilghman Island Inn and Marina.  We will definitely be back to visit again.

We left Tilghman Island in good weather and decided to cross the bay to the Solomons.

We decided that it was too early in the day to stop.  (boaters already know there are photos coming of what I am calling “the event”).  Weather for the next day looked worst (see above comment) so we crossed the Potomac in a white squall.  I took pictures for the first part, couldn’t take photos all the way through.  We came into Ingram Bay, got tied up and of course the sun came out and the wind died.  We moved the next day to a different Marina.

The next day, the sun was shining, the weather was perfect and we enjoyed a short trip into the Rappahannock River to our new HOME PORT of Urbanna!  This completes Leg 5 of our loop.
