Columbus MS

We left the lovely Waverly cutoff anchorage.  The mansion was being renovated but it was fun to walk to it and peak inside the gates.

We went to a wonderful anchorage just past Columbus marina.  On the way in we noticed a swing set and picnic tables, then continued to our anchorage in front of, you guessed it, more homes we want to live in.  We took the dink to a little dock and took the river walk to town for lunch (Shrimp & Grits) and a quick walk to Tennessee Williams birthplace.  Most folks were at church so people who were out were chatty.

We were talking to folks and it was easy to tell by our accent that we were not locals….  A man approached us, “where you all from” our response of Northern CA got a smile on his face, he explained he was a fourth generation Columbus resident and asked if we wanted to know where all the antebellum homes were in town.  (While we’re walking in the wrong direction). He rattled off about a dozen places we should walk past on our way back to the boat. We were so happy to get the local take on sites.   Then about 10 min later as we were walking and taking pictures of these incredible 1800s houses,  he drives up in a beautiful new truck, hollers out his window, “I have a little time” and offers to take us around to the homes.   Absolutely !!!

Vee told us stories about the homes previous owners back to the civil war and was able to tell us what the homes looked like before and where the original kitchen buildings were.  He took us to his family home.  His home was the first house we saw with the old swing.

We ended the tour at his private hunting club to check on dove fields and deer blinds.  Yes, the New Yorker in me was a bit apprehensive but it was a wonderful day!  I hope we come back to Columbus someday to see Vee and his family and friends on the river.

We have always heard that the best thing about the loop is the people you meet, I always assumed this meant the loopers you travel with, not true, it’s also the people in these towns we get to visit.

To quote our cousin ” there are some very good and rich hearted people in this area.  Family roots are deep and they have a very respectful and honoring relationship with the land, the wildlife, and their neighbors.  Our lives are richened by their willingness to share their best with us at ever turn.

Thank you Columbus and V.F for being a part of this bucket list trip.
